CMHA Receives $15,000 from the Draper Foundation Fund

The Draper Foundation Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut, recently awarded $15,000 to CMHA's Child & Family Services in Torrington to support care for young clients affected by trauma.

Nearly half of the children served by CMHA have a history of trauma or abuse, and trauma during childhood is a key causal factor of mental illness. Treatment at a young age can prevent issues later in life, helping to break the cycle of violence. The grant will enable CMHA’s Child & Family Services to provide specialized trauma-informed care for children and youth from the Draper Foundation Fund service area (Torrington, Winsted/Winchester, New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Norfolk, Hartland, and Colebrook).

“So many of our clients struggle with emotional trauma that can exacerbate their mental health issues,” said CMHA Northwest Center Clinical Coordinator Diane Desmarais. “We’re grateful to the Draper Foundation Fund for their support of new and proven trauma-informed treatment methods that will surely change the lives of our clients and contribute to their success and recovery.”
