Women’s Jail
Diversion Program
10 Whiting Street - New Britain, CT - (860) 229-4830
The Jail Diversion Program for Women is funded
by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services
to utilize evidence-based practices in providing gender-specific
services to women with mental health and or addiction problems
who are involved with the court system. The core aspects of
the program are intensive outreach and support, focused engagement
activities, attention to basic needs such as medication, housing,
and child custody arrangements. Once these matters are addressed,
the clients are far better able to focus on treatment issues.
The ability to engage in treatment is an integral step to
remaining out of the criminal justice system, and addressing
the underlying trauma and abuse issues that fuel the cycle
of addiction and incarceration so prevalent in the judicial
system for women.
Services are provided by Social Workers
and Case Managers who work in the courts, communities and
correctional facilities providing clinical and case management
services including individual counseling, intensive outreach,
engagement and support; emergency psychiatric care, vouchers
or tokens for clothing, transportation, housing, necessary
food; and an emergency shelter bed. The program also
delivers trauma informed services to clients utilizing the
Trauma Recovery Empowerment Model (TREM) and a skills
development group that
focuses on managing psychiatric symptoms and reducing drug
and alcohol abuse.
