Transitional Youth
Program (TYP) - New Britain - (860) 224-8880
TYP has several levels of Residential services that are
specially designed to work with young adults, aged 18 to
24 who are transitioning from services provided by the Department
of Children and Families to those of the Department of Mental
Health and Addiction Services. There are eight congregate
apartments in one building of a large apartment complex
for those initially entering the program. As success is
achieved and less supervision and support is required, residents
move to one of four scattered apartments located within
the same large apartment complex. Finally, youth transition
to Case Management or Young Adult ACTT Services (see program
descriptions).
The young people served by this program have not lived
independently and are faced with the multiple challenges
all adolescents encounter as they enter the world of adult
expectations and responsibilities. In addition, these young
adults have experienced significant emotional and or substance
abuse problems, and have often been institutionalized for
much of their adolescence. Staff work with residents to
achieve goals related to education and vocational pursuits,
as well as to complete the normal developmental tasks of
late adolescence. Residents are assisted in the concrete
tasks of developing daily living skills and budgeting.
In addition to the Program Coordinator and Assistant, there
is a Case Manager, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor,
Nurse and Clinician, as well as Residential Counselors and
Residential Monitors on the staff of this 24/7 supervised
program.
