“We believe that [mental health organizations] like CMHA must be visible in the community so that people can feel empowered to access the quality care they deserve.”

Message from the President

Welcome to the website of Community Mental Health Affiliates, Inc. (CMHA). Dedicated to improving the quality of life for Connecticut’s residents, CMHA operates an extensive mental health and addiction services delivery system throughout the state. We have 40 years of experience as one of the largest behavioral health care providers in Connecticut, and we provide treatment for over 7,300 children, adolescents, and adults each year.

I started my career here at CMHA, and after serving for more than 30 years in health and human services, I am pleased to lead the agency as it grows and moves forward with a stronger and more positive momentum than ever before. With a continuum of quality services in welcoming, accessible locations all over the state, we are quickly becoming the provider of choice for all populations across Connecticut. And with an exciting and diverse work environment, we are also becoming the employer of choice for human service professionals in Connecticut.

We are changing lives every day here at CMHA, and we invite you to join us as partners in recovery. Together, we can ensure that each and every one of Connecticut’s residents who need mental health treatment receives the quality care they deserve.

Our Mission

CMHA is a leading provider of an integrated health and behavioral health care system for children, families, and adults. By fostering improvement in the quality of life for their clients, CMHA contributes to the well-being of the communities it serves.

Our History

From 1975 to 1983, CMHA (known as CCCMHA (Central CT Community Mental Health Affiliates), was a consortium mental health center and pass through funder composed of four affiliates. CCCMHA subcontracted with area community providers for the provision of behavioral health care.

In the early 1980’s, CCCMHA began providing direct care— case management and residential crisis services. In the 1990s, CCCMHA was disbanded and the new CMHA experienced exponential growth as it began to offer support services, including vocational and social rehabilitation programs.

Over the past two decades, CMHA has continued to develop and thrive. The past three years have been particularly fruitful and exciting for the agency and the people we serve, as CMHA purchased additional properties and consolidated programs, most notably relocating our headquarters to downtown New Britain, opening an office in the heart of Waterbury’s downtown, and remodeling our state of the art New Britain Social Club.

Thanks to the foresight and strategic planning of our management team and board of directors, CMHA is well positioned to continue our upward trajectory as the area’s leader in quality, compassionate behavioral health care.

Our 2022 Annual Report

Throughout 2022, CMHA continued to provide quality care to the individuals, children, and families who need us most. We also found innovative ways to improve client care, inspired each other, and expressed gratitude for the teams and individuals that make our work possible.
